A Premier Global University

“To fulfill our promise...[we must] connect the AU community to the deepest springs of human thought, emotion, understanding, and action....It is the only task large enough and important enough to demand the investment of our lives in this place.”

President Benjamin Ladner,

Ideas into Action, Action into Service

W

ashington, D.C., is a city of diverse neighborhoods, and AU is one of those neighborhoods. Founded in 1893 by an Act of Congress, American University today is an independent coeducational university with about 12,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and professional degree programs. AU’s traditional residential campus in upper northwest Washington at the top of “Embassy Row” attracts students from all 50 U.S. states and nearly 146 other countries.

Academic Excellence: A Best Value College: American University is a Princeton Review “best value” college for our combination of outstanding academics, moderate tuition, and financial aid/scholarships — the only university selected as a best value in the Washington, D.C. area. Our business, international studies, law, and public affairs programs are nationally ranked, and there has been a tremendous growth in the fine arts facilities on campus. Typically, the top twelve percent of admitted students are invited to join the Honors Program. About 30% are offered merit scholarships, and about 65% get financial aid. You can choose from over 70 majors and minors and strong Pre-law and Premedical Programs. Most majors offer the option of pursuing one of our combined bachelor’s/master’s programs.

Access and Engagement: The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) ranked AU as the top doctoral/research institution surveyed for quality of “student-faculty interaction” and “enriching educational experiences,” such as internships, community service, and study abroad. Our academic programs lead you to develop critical thinking, awareness of ethical issues, hone your technology skills, develop independent research and creative abilities, and engage in collaborative learning. Our professors are well known U.S. and international scholars who are active participants in their fields. All are teachers, and all teach undergraduates. The average undergraduate class size is 23.

Life on Campus:  We think we offer the best of both worlds – a traditional campus and easy access using the Metro to all the diversity and excitement you can find in DC — and on campus — over 140 student clubs, frequent on-campus speakers, and social events including films, music, plays, and winning NCAA Division I sports.

Almost all first-year students and over 60% of all students live in recently renovated housing on campus. AU has a main dining room close to the residence halls and many small cafés and delis. Because AU is in a residential neighborhood in DC, you have the option of finding an off-campus apartment within walking distance of campus.

The campus is fully wired and wireless for laptop computers, PDAs and mobile phones. INTEL ranks AU as the #9 most “unwired” campus in the U.S. and AU is a T-Mobile HotSpot with a full T-1 connection at every location.

Connections Here and Abroad: Washington,D.C., offers internship and job opportunities in every field. And the AU Abroad Program lets you expand your studies into international settings in over 80 locations, selecting from among language immersion programs and topical programs, such as cinema studies in Prague, and from among one or two semester, summer, and spring break options.

Working with expert journalists, well known scientists and artists, discussing issues with political leaders and ambassadors, and learning from the CEOs of national and multinational corporations is not the exception for AU students — it is the norm. You test your knowledge, network with professionals in your field, and build a resumé — all experiences that prepare you for a successful career or further graduate study.
